4. Article Concerns: Federal that law that prohibits giving unlawful immigrants a license or public benefit.
5. Why is this important/affect individuals and families?:
This is a very important case not only for immigrants who are here unlawfully, but for our nation as a whole. With the increasing number of immigrants who are currently living in the U.S. and for those who are trying to cross over to the states, his law makes it even more difficult for them This specific case also affects us a nation because somewhere down the line the ball was dropped in enforcing this federal law.
6. Personal Views
In my personal opinion I do believe that in this specific case Sergio Garcia should be granted the license to practice law. Although Mr. Garcia's immigration status is not cleared, he has been living in the states for 12 years already and went on to graduate from a California law school with an exceptional record that bar examiners found him "morally fit to practice law". I believe that he should not have to pay the price just because the state managed to overlook his immigration statues and continued to let him go on with his education knowing that federal law prohibits unlawful immigrants from receiving a public benefit. As mentioned, his father did apply for a green card for him and has yet to receive it which brings up another concerning issue because the process is extremely lengthy and takes years to finally be granted citizenship. I do not believe that this is an issue that should be taken lightly because it affects a great majority of people who come to America wanting to live a better life in hopes of receiving an education and becoming a professional. However, I will say that I do believe it is very important for all immigrants to apply for citizenship and to be made aware of and educated on U.S. laws.
