A potential policy that is being considered to help with a problem/issue that individuals/families
face
5. Importance
on families/individuals: The issue effects many people in our community as cigarette
smoke is a health issue for the public including smokers as well as
non-smokers. Smoke raises the risk of cancer for everybody that inhales it and
when smoking is permitted inside of public places, the public is exposed to it.
6. My
input: It was a surprise to me when I moved to San Marcos when I realized that
smoking was allowed inside of public places. Coming from the Dallas metroplex,
where smoking is banned everywhere, it was a shock to see that smoking was
still allowed inside, especially after I had gotten used to not having to be
around it. One of the things that really bothers me about certain restaurants
and bars around town was that a lot of places allow smoking indoors.
Non-smokers not only have to smell smoke on their clothes and hair after they
leave a public place, but it also runs a health risk and not only the people
who are smoking themselves. Second-hand smoke is so dangerous for people who
are inhaling it and raises the risk of cancer. I am beyond thrilled that San
Marcos has finally made the steps toward becoming a smoke-free community. I
only wish it could be in effect sooner.
