Why is this important’/how does this affect
individuals/families? Hazing is something that happens every year during initiation for all different types of organizations. Many times students don't realize the legal severity that hazing can have on their lives.
I have mixed opinions on the reported hazing incident that involved more than a dozen Texas State drumline band members. I know this isn't the first or last case of reported hazing on the Texas State campus. I feel as though many of the students that were being "hazed" probably would have done the activities that have been reported willingly, or for "fun" for that matter. I feel like there is a fine line between what should be considered "hazing" and what should just be referred to as "underage drinking". I do think there should be some sort of repercussions for the actions reported, because it is regarding an organization that represents the university and they did provide alcohol to minors. On the contrary I also think that since this is a college town, many college freshman drink to puke without having to be told to do so, and I feel as though the consequences and punishments for those "forcing" the freshman to drink should be a little less harsh. I don't think the consequences that these students receive should be detrimental to the rest of their college careers or their future. I think that community service or alcohol awareness classes would probably be a sufficient form of punishment for them.. I think that everyone should take responsibility for their own actions and I believe that the freshman band members involved realistically had a choice whether or not they wanted to participate in this "hazing" activity and should be held accountable.
