Possibility of a Permanent Farmers Market in Downtown Austin

Category: Food, Community

Level: Local

Concerning: A potential policy that is being considered to help a problem/issue that individuals/families face

Why is this important/how does this affect families/individuals? The possibility of a permanent daily food marketplace in downtown Austin will have a positive affect on individuals, families, and the Austin community.  The creation of a permanent farmers market would be beneficial from a nutritional standpoint, as well as a recreational one.

My Views: I think the creation of a permanent food marketplace in downtown Austin is a great idea.  As stated in the article, “Markets can become one of the most beloved parts of town”.  Although Austin already houses several marketplaces where fresh and organic produce is available, the idea of an actual farmer’s marketplace is exciting. Given the opportunity to have a conversation with the farmer that grew the specific produce you want to purchase, I think many people would take it. As said by David Pitre, an advocate of the permanent market, “Farmers like to be at the market, and consumers want to talk to a farmer. They want to know why that tomato is so special”. I think that is a great statement that holds true for many Austinites. Buying local produce is an initiative that Austinites value greatly, and a permanent famers market would encourage that. In addition to consumer/farmer interaction and having access to extremely fresh produce, a permanent food marketplace could double as a community/cultural center.  The marketplace could be used for a variety of community activities and events. Although Pitre is in a favor of a permanent Austin market, he believes it would be most beneficial for the market to focus on specialty foods and products, and only have two days of a full farmers market. I think that is a smart approach, at least for the beginning stages. Regardless of the details, I’m glad this idea is being discussed. I think the creation of a permanent food marketplace will be beneficial for the community as a whole, especially for the local food movement.
