level of problem: Nationwide situation but problem happened in Washington
Category: Mass shooting by gunman in a navy yard
This article is concerning:
The background of the man that shot and killed 12 people in a navy yard and why the system could be changed for people with history of gun violence and psychiatric disorders.
Importance/affect on families or individuals:
This unfortunate situation effects families to the extreme because it has taken 12 people away from the rest of their family members.
My opinion on the article:
In what might be the most awful thing that has happened on American soil this entire year, I am terribly mortified that people with a history of gun violence and psychiatric disorders are still allowed to purchase and own weapons such as the man who committed this crime. Even with his history of paranoia, sleeping disorders, and outrageous claims of thinking people are trying to, "put radioactive microwaves into his hotel room" he is still allowed security clearance and still allowed to own guns. I am all for the constitutional right to bear arms, but I am very FOR background checks of anyone attempting to purchase a firearm. Most of the people in the last several mass shootings in the United States have had histories of mental health problems. Rather than banning guns period like many people are wanting to do, I would suggest furthering our abilities to check up on peoples past history. A few years back this man was also convicted of shooting another persons tires out of their vehicle because he was angry and yet he was not incarcerated at all for this because the judge lost his paperwork. Even when there are no injuries, the use of a firearm needs to be punished because of what can happen next time they decide to open up.
