Feds face grieving parents' suit over backover deaths
Category of problem: Children/Safety
Level of problem: National
This is a potential policy that is being considered to help
a problem/issue that individuals/families face.
Why this important/how does it affect families/individuals? This
affects children every day which then affects families. Statistics are higher
then expected for accidental back-over deaths.
My views on the issue/policy: I had no idea how big of an
issue this is. Accidental deaths resulted by a car backing up is extremely
heartbreaking and devastating to the entire family but I did not realize how often
it actually happens. I think of this type of accident as a ‘freak-accident’
meaning that it is rare, but does happen. Now, after so many cases, parents are
suing the federal government because some cars do not have cameras. A few who commented
in the article who work with the transportation systems verified that they are
installing cameras in vehicle models and are listing that on their website. My
confusion is to why the parents are suing the government over an accident they
themselves did. I don’t know the statistical age range of children getting run
over but from personal experience, I make sure my child is either in the house,
in someone’s arms, or in the car with me before I even start the engine. I
realize freak accidents happen, but that is just that, an accident. Installing
cameras in cars is indeed a really helpful security system and it will have an
impact on car sales because parents want that as a standard feature. If I was
purchasing a vehicle, there’s no doubt that I would want cameras but I am also
comfortable with not having a camera system and being fully aware of what is
around me as I back up or pull out somewhere.
