Republicans Pass Deep Cuts on Food Stamps

Category: Poverty/ Politics

Level: National

Concerning: A potential policy that is being considered to help a problem/issue that individuals/families face

This affects families in a MAJOR way. Food stamps are a major way for people in Poverty to receive food. The government is trying to take that away.

My Views: After watching the video in class about Food Stamps, I have become more aware of how important food stamps are and the little amount people in poverty are forced to live on. This bill that was passed in the House by the Republicans will hopefully not be passed in the Senate and the President. With these cuts, people in poverty will live on less than $1 per meal and become overwhelmingly more sick, unhealthy, and not have enough energy to be able to perform normal activities throughout the day. The man who wrote this bill says that it will make people get jobs like people on welfare are forced to do. Well I am not knowledgeable about the terms of Welfare yet but I know that people who are on food stamps want to get jobs but they either can’t because of a sickness or the fact that there are no jobs available for them in their area.  The bill will also restrict people who are on welfare to be automatically accepted for Food Stamps, I think that if a person is on welfare they are obviously not able to provide for their families and need the extra assistance from the government to live day to day. The government is definitely going in the wrong direction to help the poverty epidemic in America. Four million people being taken off of food stamps if this bill will be passed, it should be going in the other direction of 4 million people being put on food stamps because the terms by which poverty is calculated is way skewed. The government should find other ways to cut spending than taking food away from its own citizens.
