Week 5 Article 3

1.    Lopez, E.A. (2013 September, 26). Dominican ruling strips many of citizenship. The Houston Chronicle. Retrieved from http://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/world/article/Dominican-ruling-strips-many-of-citizenship-4846612.php
2.    Category of Problem: Citizenship
3.    Level of Problem: International
4.    Article concerns: Anyone that lives in the Dominican Republic born under migrant decent will get their citizenship revoked.
5.    This highly affects families because their citizenship could possibly get taken away. They could be forced to move or even be kicked out of their country.
6.    My concerns: I completely disagree with the Dominican Republic’s constitutional court about this issue. I think that it is wrong of them to take away people’s citizenship just because they were born under someone that was not a citizen. This goes as far back as migrants from 1929. People could essentially have been born in the Dominican Republic and have lived there all of their lives and still have their citizenship taken away from them. I think that it is morally wrong to make innocent children pay for their parent’s mistakes. If you are born in a particular state or country you should automatically become a citizen of that place. These families and individuals could be forced to move or potentially be kicked out of their country, somewhere where they could’ve been born and raised.
