Benefits for same-sex couples

National
4. An
“enacted” policy that has been passed to help with a problem/issue that
individuals/families face
5. Importance
on families/individuals: This issue affects same-sex couples in the US as Exxon
is a large corporation that provides jobs for many people in our country.
Because of the benefits Exxon will be providing, many spouses of same-sex
couples will be able to have benefits when they didn’t before.
6. My
input: Because Exxon provides jobs for 77,000 people in our country, I think
that having healthcare benefits for same-sex couples is a very good step for
this company. On October 1, Exxon will begin providing benefits for the spouses
of the same-sex couples because they say they are following federal definition.
Exxon was rated last in a Human Rights Campaign ranking when it comes to
corporate anti-discrimination policies. I do agree that Exxon has been slow to
make the steps they’re making towards equality but in the end I am glad to hear
that they will be providing these benefits for same-sex couples and their
families. I do think it is a shame that they waited for Labor Department to issue
guidance first.
