New Jersey Gay Marriage

1. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/27/new-jersey-gay-marriage-_n_4004723.html

2. Category of Problem/Issue: Gay Rights

3. Level of Problem: State

4. The article concerns:
-Starting October 21st, New Jersey will allow same sex marriages

5. Why is this important to individuals/families OR How does it affect individuals/families?
-Gay and lesbian couples will now be able to legally wed and be legally recognized as married couple

6. What are your views on the issue/problem?
-I love that there are now 14 states that allow legal same-sex marriage. Although that is still nothing compared to the amount of states that don't, it's progress. I view marriage as a basic right and I can't seem to wrap my head around the idea that gay marriage would be a "bad thing". Judge Mary Jacobson of Mercer county, ruled same-sex marriage legal starting October 21st. She said that not allowing this would be "unequal treatment" and that "same-sex couples must be allowed to marry in order to obtain equal protection of the law under the New Jersey Constitution." I often compare this inequality to the African American Civil Rights Movement. Hopefully by the time I have children, this issue will be a thing of the past.
