2. Category of problem/issue: Privacy
3. Level of problem/issue: State level
4. The article concerns: Every single person in the state of Texas may no longer have privacy because of the possibility of drone surveillance.
5. Why is this important to individuals/families OR how does it affect individuals/families?
--The Texas law that took effect on September 1st prohibits civilians from taking pictures or surveillance of other civilians, which is great. However, the law does not prohibit law enforcement from doing it. This is infringing on our first amendment rights.
6. What are your views on the issue?
--I think that the new Texas law is great, but only in the fact that it prohibits other civilians from conducting surveillance or taking pictures of my private property. I do not need people trying to see what I am doing in my own backyard. That is for me and for whomever I want to know. The right to privacy is one that we should not have to work hard for. It was given to us when the Constitution was written all of those years ago. The Founding Fathers could see how it was important then, so why can't the government see it now? We should still respect it today. If people were to just stick to caring more about what they are doing, than what I am doing, everything would be copacetic.
The part of the law that I do not like is the one where the police can basically do whatever they wish. The book 1984 can not help but pop into my head. Big Brother seems a lot closer to reality now. This new law also makes me think that the state of Texas is soon to become a police state. This could make it easier to regulate what everyone does, which could, in turn, evolve into control.
With these facts in mind, the new law will greatly affect families. Potentially, the police could survey how parents are raising their children. If the police do not like what they see, it could be harmless or a game of sorts, they would come into their homes and take their children away. This might be stretching it, but if I learned anything from reading 1984 anything is possible.
