2. Category of problem: gun control
3. Level of problem: state
4. An "enacted" policy that has been passed to help with the problem that individuals face
5. It is important that blind individuals are treated the same way as individuals with sight so they wouldn't be blocked from the Disabilities Act.
6. The way I view it for hunting purposes is as long as the blind individual has a seeing individual with him while using the gun then there should be no harm with letting the blind get a gun permit for hunting. Iowa made a adamant rule by allowing legal hunter who is blind be accompanied with a hunting partner who has sight with them at all times when using the gun as well as some sort of laser sighting device. Otherwise, a blind man carrying a concealed weapon anywhere, that's a little crazy. I understand that every individual wants to be treated with equality but majority of people with a disability understand their limitations. Just because you want to carry a gun, doesn't mean you should be allowed to. The federal Gun Control act of 1968 proves this point; the act created rules on who and who can't be allowed to have a gun to protect the publics' safety.
For example, People who were convicted criminals, people addicted to controlled substances and anyone who has been committed to a mental institution are just a few of those who aren't allowed to possess firearms, but every state has different rules. I am not saying that individuals that are blind are mentally insane or criminals but they would cause a public safety issue if they were allowed to carry concealed gun out and about in public. If a blind man was carrying a concealed hand gun out in public, he can only relay on his hearing to assess the situation at hand. Let's say he hears what he thinks to be a troubling situation but really wasn't, could raise into a public safety issue for the civilians around him. Where as, a man with sight carrying a concealed weapon, could assess the situation with his vision and hearing to see if it was really a troubling situation.
The law has already been getting a lot of buss about how the other states will react to the law and how many others will follow in Iowa foot steps. Iowa's new law will definitely get other states thinking about whether or not to create a bill for the blind to have a gun permit. I know for sure that Texas will not be one of them, and probably many of the states in the south.
