Category of problem: Health/Medical

Level of problem: Local

This is an enacted policy that has been passed to help with a problem that individuals/families face except no changes to this policy will be made after this issue. It was considered  a ' poor judgment call'. The hospital stated that Braka had no reason to be credentialed therefore no change to policy.

Why this is important or how does this affect individuals/families? This is a huge problem for patient/physician confidentiality and safety. Young patients were being sexually abused and this professional was then asked to teach a workshop at a Children’s hospital.

My views: The head physician of Urology at UT Southwestern is just now being demoted from a major incident that happened in 2010-2011. This should have been done when the incident happened. He brought in a surgeon who had been abusive to children to teach a workshop to fellow doctors at his hospital. In whose right mind thinks that associating this man with young patients, whom he has already admitted to being sexually abusive to prior patients, is acceptable?! I would be furious if my child or I was a patient at this hospital and this was happening. Aivar Bracka, a British reconstructive surgeon, admitted to exposing himself to young patients and then accepted an invitation to teach at a Children’s hospital after already having his license revoked. BOTH Bracka and the surgeon who allowed this to happen should have lost their license and possibly been sentenced to jail time for sexual abuse and knowledge of this crime happening. What makes matters worse was that Bracka was already guilty of doing this before the teaching stint began and had a reputation for indecency and performing sexual deeds. I think UT Southwestern should also be held liable for allowing this to happen because a similar incident has happened before. Another physician was accused of sexually harassing female co-workers during his training but was endorsed and hailed at UT Southwestern by one of his superiors as having an excellent work ethic. This hospital is going to get a lot of backlash for allowing this to happen and not staying on top of each expert, patient, professional coming in and out. It should’ve been part of their enacted policy to credential him especially since HIPPA plays a major role in all hospital facilities.
