Two Students Expelled from Hays High over Hunting Weapons

Level: Local
Concerning: A problem/issue that individuals/families face.
Category: Schools, Gun Control
Why is this important’/how does this affect individuals/families? This incident is important in that it directly affects the two students that were expelled from their high school. It also affects other individuals that may have been in similar situations, and can now learn from the precedent.
My View: I believe that Hays High School was right in expelling the two students that were carrying “hunting weapons” in their vehicles, located on campus.  The article states that the spokesman for the Hays Consolidated Independent School District said he hated that it was “such a severe consequence”.  I do not think this consequence was severe at all. In light of the numerous school shootings that have occurred recently, I am surprised that these students are not facing any criminal charges in addition to their expulsion. How do officials know that these weapons were brought to school by mistake and the students did not have evil intentions? There have been multiple shootings in which the gunman was an unsuspecting individual. It worries me that there is no investigation into a possible motive for these students bringing weapons to school. The article states that “the weapons were locked inside the student’s vehicles and there was no threat to the school”. I question the accuracy of that statement. Just because the weapons were locked in their cars does not mean they could not access them. Obviously the students had their keys with them and could enter their vehicles if intended. It is a sad reality, but our society must question and be suspicious of any kind of irregular behavior occurring on a school campus, as well as any public facility. However, I believe that is better to be safe than sorry.
