Texas Supreme Court to take up same sex divorce case

Jordan Brewer Article 3

1. Parker, Kolten. (Houston Chronicle) The Supreme Court is about to figure out what to do about same sex divorce in the state of Texas.

2. Category of problem: divorce amongst the gay population

3. Level of problem: State situation

4. The article concerns: Any gay married couple in the state of Texas looking to get divorced.

5. How is this article important to families or individual policy?
It is important to families that consist of gay individuals.  At the moment it is both illegal in the State of Texas to get married and get divorced for the gay population.  Divorce has never come up in a conversation simply because gay marriage was never an option to begin with so what was the point of having laws for divorce.

6. My opinion on the subject:
I do not particularly stand for gay marriage in Texas based on my ridiculously right wing upbringing and conservative family.  I am not quite as strict with gay marriage as many conservatives are and by that I mean I think if a gay couple weds somewhere legal then moves to Texas and things don't work out, I think they should have the option of divorce.  It would be an odd ruling simply because of the fact that marriage is illegal, but the fact is they can get married legally in other places so it would be convenient to not have to go out of the state to legally file for a divorce.
