It
is important/affects individuals and families because many people are discriminated against because of their gender orientation. Because there were previously no laws to prevent discrimination, unfair and unjust treatment is something that frequently occurs in these individuals/families lives.

I am excited that the San Antonio City council voted in favor of the non-biased ordinances involving veteran status and LGBT protections. Although the views on gay rights has made large strides in the last few decades, I still find it hard to believe that even in the year 2013 the LGBT community is still fighting for equality and a place to fit in. I strongly believe that ones sexual orientation should not define who they are as a person. I think that all people should have the same right to happiness and people should not be treated as outcasts because of a difference in lifestyle choices. I
don't think that everyone has to necessarily agree with the outlooks and views on
gay rights but I think that peoples personal decisions should be
respected. I think the protections that San Antonio has recently enacted will be nothing but beneficial to the diverse city. I think that one day the LGBT community will not be something that is looked down upon and judged so harshly, and this seems to be one more step in that direction.
