Free Breakfast and Lunch

1.http://www.chron.com/news/us/article/Family-income-not-a-factor-as-students-eat-free-4791314.php
2. Category of problem/issue: Children
3. Level of problem/issue: National level
4. The article concerns: A program known as Community Eligibility Option, which is as program that is part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 that authorized $4.5 billion in new program funding. This is allowing 10 states and the District of Columbia to offer students two free meals every school day, whether or not their families can afford them.
5. Why is this important to individuals/families OR how does this affect individuals/families:
--Families with children going to public school will be highly affected. Parents will no longer have to provide their child with breakfast or lunch. Saves money for the parents and the schools.
6. What are your views on the issue/problem?
--I think that this program is an amazing idea that I am excited to see put into action. Every student at my high school was able to get free breakfast. I took advantage of it almost every morning. This was even though my family had the means to feed me breakfast, I still felt like I had to take some of the burden away. The breakfast was not terrible, but actually more nutritious then what I would have fed myself at home.
Having the Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 in schools will not only save schools money, but also save parents money and time. Parents no longer have to buy lunch food for their kids. This will also free up their time because they will not have to make their children lunches every morning, if they choose. This will greatly affect families who live pay check to pay check. I think they will be put at ease, concerning money and their child's rumbling stomach. If I were a parent I would take advantage of the Hunger-Free Kids Act.
Schools being able to serve two meals a day will benefit the students the most. Since they will be full of free food, this will help turn their focus on their school work. I think school official's are hoping for it. Saving money, time and creating a better environment is hopefully a result of the Hunger-Free Kids Act. I think this act is going to do wonders and will hopefully spread to other states in this country. If every school system were to adopt this program, I think the amount of hungry people in this country will decrease in a big way. Most of the hungry are children coming from poor families. Having breakfast and lunch being served everyday will make a huge difference in their lives.
