Week #2, Article #2
Wayne, Alex. (2013, September 11). Obamacare computer hub completes security tests . San Antonio Express News-Bloomberg News.
Category of problem/issue: Healthcare
Level of problem: National
The article concerns: The computer system that will assist healthcare providers in determining the eligibility of at least half of the 50 million uninsured Americans.
Why is this important to families/individuals OR how does it affect individuals/families?
This system is what will provide information to determine who is eligible come October 1st, when the Affordable Care act, also known as Obamacare, goes into motion. Many uninsured Americans will be seeking coverage on come this day, and their ability to receive services is in the hands of this database, which will inform healthcare providers if they are indeed eligible for health care services.
What are your views on the issue/policy?
I think that it is great that we will finally have this healthcare act in place. Many healthcare providers have opted to offer this healthcare change even before this October 1st date. I know personally, I have been able to remain on my parents insurance while I am in school and until I am 26, even though I am married and am a declared independent. This is just one example of how this health care act is helping many people. Many college students are in school full time and unable to get benefits good enough to live off of with part time jobs. There are also many other groups of people who this is going to assist, such as elderly and veterans. Having this computer system completed and in order is going to help everything go much smoother come the October 1st start date. Hopefully, many Americans will get the healthcare they have needed and have not been able to receive.
