SAISD teaming up with UIW

Week #2, Article #1
Lloyd, Jennifer; Cesar, Maria Luisa. (2013, September 10). SAISD to work with UIW on med school. San Antonio Express News.
Category of problem/issue: Education
Level of problem: Local
The article concerns: The potential teaming up of the University of the Incarnate Word and San Antonio Independent School District to enhance SAISD’s health carreer programs and set these students up for success and easy access to furthering their education.
Why is this important to families/individuals OR how does it affect individuals/families?
This is important to these students and their future families because they are being given an opportunity to take advantage of the resource of having a medical field magnet program that is tied to a University. Coming from what was once the lowest achieving high school in Texas, this partnership will not only do a great service to their students and community, but also help this school district improve academically.
What are your views on the issue/policy?

I think that this plan to build a medical school on Fox Tech High School's unused land is a great idea not only for SAISD, but also for the University of the Incarnate Word. Building this school on a high school campus that has a medical magnet program is a great service to these students. SAISD is known for its low academic achievements and graduation rate, however this could be a big step towards fixing that issue. This program will greatly improve this school districts reputation. Not only will it give students a direct contact with a University, it will also draw students to this school because they have this medical school on campus. The University is also doing a service to the community by offering grants and scholarships to some students graduating from SAISD and enrolling in their University. I feel that especially in places where graduation retention is really low, there needs to be more options for students to be successful. Having specific programs in High Schools motivates these students to want to specialize in something for their career and for the better of their families. I am personally really excited to see how this all plays out. SAISD is being given an opportunity to become a better district and in turn, improve the academic achievement of their students and community. This project is still in the very early stages, but I do see this being a big leap towards the betterment of the SAISD schools and the community around it.
