2. Category of issue: Student debt
3. Level of issue: National level
4. The article concerns: Students who are going to ivy league schools, like Yale and Harvard, are graduating from college with smaller debts than those students who are going to less prestigious schools.
5. Why is this important to families/individuals Or how does it affect individuals/families?
--The reality that students who go to more expensive and prestigious are leaving those schools with lower debt seems to be unfair. A lot of students who do go to a less expensive and prestigious school are doing there because it is more affordable. The public sticker price on ones education should not be a factor when looking at ivy league schools.
6. What are your views on the issue?
--In my personal experience, I feel that this article does not have a lot of truth behind it. My older brother went to an Ivy League schools and because of that I was not able to go to a school outside of Texas. The tuition for my brothers school was almost quadruple of mine here at Texas State. He did not receive much to any financial aid. My brother and my parents will be in debt from his Ivy League education for many years to come.
On the other hand I do see where this article is coming from. Most Ivy League schools have very prestigious alumni that can give out scholarships. They are also able to give out jobs to graduates from their alma mater. However, most people in this world are not able to get into schools like Harvard or Yale. So as an alternative, those students have to go to state schools. " In fact, some of the schools sending graduates out into the world with
huge debts are campuses that aren’t the boldfaced names that top the
typical best-of lists." We as Texas States students are lucky because we go to the cheapest state school in Texas. Students at UT and A&M definitely pay for those names and emblems to be on their diplomas.
Is it fair that students who go to schools at an Ivy League college come out of it with smaller debts then the people who do not? Maybe. They work hard to get into those schools and should be rewarded with a less heavy load of debt. However, people who do go to college at all should be able to have that same chance to receive a smaller debt.
