Google argues for right to continue scanning Gmail

  2. Category: Privacy
  3. Level: National
  4. Concerns: A problem/issue that individuals/families face
  5. Importance on families/individuals: If individuals in this country feel as though their privacy is violated by Google reading their email then I feel as though a trial should be held. People have the right to fight against what they think is wrong and if they feel as though they are wronged by Google then they should be allowed to fight against them.
  6. My input: This is an issue I see both sides on. I do understand that it is a violation of privacy when Google reads through your email to gain information so that they can market advertisements for you. People also aren’t completely positive what else Google is doing with the information they are gaining by looking through your personal email. I do also think it’s wrong that they read email sent from people with other email providers when those people have not agreed to Google’s terms and conditions. In Google’s defense, most people have a general idea of what they sign up for when they get an email account. When you type anything in on a computer or email provider, you should know they are probably going to use the information you post as a marketing tool. I do also believe that humans are not the ones scanning your email as much as it being all automated so somehow I feel as though that makes it a little better and less like an invasion of privacy. Overall, I think the trial should go on and not be dismissed because I think that advocates of privacy would be very grateful if they know that Google is not exempt from laws. I also believe that if the advocates for privacy were to win this case then it would definitely be a precedent for other email providers.
