The meat industry gets a wake-up call

Level: National
Concerning: Families and their food supply.
Category: Meat industry, food policy and safety
Why is this important’/how does this affect individuals/families? This issue is particularly important because it concerns the safety and value of the meat industry and the consumers that buy it and serve the food to their families.
My View:
I believe that the American public deserves to know more information about the meat they consume. It does not seem like such a big deal to label the meat with where it was born, raised, and slaughtered. The fact that the major players in the meat industry like the president of the American Meat Institute and others are so outraged about this verdict and are trying to appeal it so heavily leads me to believe that they are avidly trying to hide some nasty secret about where they get the meat they are feeding the country with. Granted, putting extra labels on packaging may become a little costly, but I do not believe that enforcing mandatory labeling for public safety and piece of mind should be considered “unconstitutional”. What is unconstitutional is secretly mixing all different types of meat into sausage or other things and mislabeling it, just to make extra money. Consumers and families have the right to be informed on whether their meat is coming from San Antonio or Mexico, and if there is meat from two different cattle inside their hamburgers. Not only does this information let the consumer have a piece of mind on what they are putting inside their bodies, they have the choice to pick where they want their meat to come from. Hopefully the industries appealing this decision will not prevail and good food policy can go into effect.
