Settlement for Shackled Pregnant Woman

Category: Human Rights, Law, Immigration
Level: National
Concerning: A problem/issue that individuals face
Why is this important/how does this affect individuals/families? This issue is important because it directly affects the woman involved in the situation. It is also important because it sets a precedent for other situations of similar nature.
My Views: This whole situation is upsetting and in my opinion, a violation of human rights. Juana Villegas, the woman in the article, was living in America illegally which obviously has negative consequences. She had also been caught living illegally once before and was deported as a result. However, regardless her immigration status, she still deserves to be treated with dignity. She is not a criminal wanted for a dangerous crime, so why was it necessary to handcuff her to her hospital bed while she was giving birth? Whoever made that decision should face consequences. In addition to being shackled while in labor and during her recovery, Ms. Villegas was prohibited from using a breast pump after she was returned to jail. That decision put Ms. Villegas’s health in jeopardy and is completely unethical. Although I doubt it will happen, I hope that the individuals involved in making the decisions to handcuff her during labor and take away her breast pump are held accountable and face negative consequences. On the up side, I am glad that Ms. Villegas received a large settlement and the possibility of a resident visa. That is the least the Nashville authorities can do.
