2. Category of problem: Gun violence
3. Level of problem: Local
4. The article concerns: How a student
killed himself at school during lunch time
5.Why is this important to
families/individuals OR how does it affect individuals/families? The school is
supposed to be a safe environment, when
things like this happen, we think twice.
6.What are your views on the
issue/policy?
More gun violence, this time it is at
the school. How did this student carry around a gun all day until lunch? He
also had posted a picture to facebook with a gun to his head. Why did no one
speak up? Surely the kids couldn’t have thought it was a joke. I would wonder
where he got the gun from and is it a call for help? What was in the letter
that he posted on facebook? I believe that was a call for help. Someone should
have caught it. I think this will cause a big concern to the safety of the
school. It could have been other students shot as well. Parents want to know
that the place where they HAVE to send kids for an education is safe. The boy
was sitting alone when he pulled out the handgun. Where were the teachers and
other student? Maybe the boy was bullied, but that still isn’t a reason.
What concerns me is that he made cries for help on two separate social media websites. Two! How did nobody adress this?! and maybe there should be systems in place on instagram and facebook that red flag certain phrases or pictures. Another concern is that if somebody was told about his threats to kill himself what did they do about it? Or did they completely disregard his cries and call him the boy that cried wolf? There is no reason for this boy to fall through the cracks the way he did. We as adults need to be more viglant in our schools and around our kids social media sites. But that is so much more easily said than done.
