Category: Austin bans tubers from part of river for safety reasons

Level: Local

Who: Families and Individuals

This Article is about the City of Austin closing a section of the Colorado River from tubing and swimming access due to high, unexpected currents being released from the Longhorn Dam.

I am a fan of this ban. The city wants to protect its citizens and with unscheduled releases of water from the Longhorn Dam currents can be very strong and cause drownings. Although reports have stated there have not been any drownings reported and only 18 rescues since 2006 it is just a safe precautionary until it does happen. There was a tubing business that is having to go out of business because of the shutdown but at least it is because of the shut down rather than someone drowning in his tube. That sounds very morbid but it is true. The city allows sturdy boats on the river like kayaks and canoes so they river can still be enjoyed, but just no swimming! A fine will be given to swimmers unless you are rescuing someone.
