Leadership Class at TXST

Level:  Local

Category: University Curriculum

Concerning: An enacted policy that will affect families and individuals

This article is important because it brings more depth to freshman curriculum and understanding.

My Views:  I think that this is a great course to be required for freshman. Currently going through the whole process of finding a full time job, and looking for a job in management currently, a leadership class would have been great to take. Sure, I have taken classes in business management and retail management but those classes very briefly talk about how to be a good leader. This class will even help them in the school setting also. Throughout college, I don’t know how many group projects I have had to participate in but this class would have helped me get along with others when I was younger better because people aren’t going to mesh well with everyone. I wish I could go back and be able to take this class but then I think again and retract that because I am so ready to graduate! I really hope this pilot class happening next semester will work out because it will be so beneficial! Maybe even one day it will be available for all grade levels to take.

  1. I completely agree that a class that focuses on leadership would be very beneficial to Texas State students. For some individuals, being a leader comes natural. However, for many others it is a challenge and it is considerably easier to just follow. The ability to lead and take command of a situation can be extremely beneficial in a school setting as well as in the business world. As stated in cbd2’s commentary, college students are faced with countless group projects. If a student processes the ability to take control of the situation and become the leader of the group, they will have a much more efficient group project. In my experience, I have found that being the leader of a group project always yields better results, because I can control the situation. In addition, in today’s society, the most successful people are those who are leaders, not followers. Having the courage to take the initiative and encourage others to follow you is an important attribute in the business world. I strongly support the University’s decision to introduce a pilot course in Leadership. I think it is wise to begin with a pilot course, and then expand if necessary. I believe that the course will be successful and will be very beneficial to all that participate.
