The protected bike lane recently opened on the "drag" in Austin, Texas is an awesome addition to a city full of people who rely on bicycles as their primary source of transportation. The bike lane will assist in providing physical protection and barriers to raise the safety of bicyclists. I think these protected bike lanes should be implemented more often because safety is always a problem that bicyclists face in urban cities like Austin. Since the University of Texas is right on the drag, there are many bicyclists that ride their bikes down these jam packed roads every day. With this separate bike lane, less accidents are likely and more students will feel safe riding this bikes to class. Lanes like these will hopefully encourage and promote more people to ride their bikes places and will possibly aid in reducing congestion and traffic issues. I think several health benefits will also come along with the new bike lane due to the increase in people getting more of a workout from riding their bikes around town. Although I think the main target market for these bike lanes is in large cities, I also think that more rural areas would benefit from something like this as well. I lived in Wimberley for a while and there were many frequent bicyclists out there. With the curviness or the hill country and the narrow lanes, it was often dangerous and difficult to see bikers coming around corners and over hills. With some form of protection between bikers and driving lanes I think the number of bike related injuries would decrease.
