2. Category of problem: Child abuse
3. Level of problem: National level
4. The article concerns: Boy Scouts of America holds a symposium about how to spot and prevent child abuse.
5. Why is this important to individuals/families OR how does it affect individuals/families?
--Child abuse is not joke. It affects families when a a child within those families gets abused. Abused children can potentially come troubled individuals.
6. What are your views on the issue/problem?
--The problem of child abuse is growing in America. In the past parents would promote their children to play outside. This got them to exercise, meet friends, and entertain themselves with no cost. Unfortunately, parents now do not allow their children to walk outside, let alone play outside, without someone watching over them. I would think that sending my future son to Boy Scouts would not be dangerous. It would be educational and would allow him to meet new people and have new experiences. This article makes it a reality for me that there is no assured safety for my child, not even in Boy Scouts. What I infer from this article is that people even back in the day should not have trusted the Boy Scouts to keep their sons safe. "The release of the so-called "perversion files" that Boy Scouts kept on alleged pedophiles from 1959 to 1985 badly damaged its reputation." Those files were not released to the public and were seemingly kept from the authorities up until they were leaked. That makes me think that someone in the organization knew the entire time, but just wanted money from families. I knew America was greedy, but how much can someone crave greed to subject children to abuse?
This article is another one to add to all the other controversial articles regarding the Boys Scouts that have come out in the last couple of years. It explains to me why the organization was against homosexuals. They did not want to have to deal with these types of issues in the public eye. The Boy Scouts have always been looked at as a way for young boys to become leaders and gain useable skills. It might be safer for your sons to never step into a Boys Scouts troop.
