Raids to Free Minks

Category: Animal Rights
Level: National
Concerning: A problem/issue that individuals face.
Why is this important/how does this affect individuals/families? This matter is important because animal rights are a critical issue that many people care about. This issue not only affects the animals, but the individuals that are involved in the raids and the members of the community that live near the mink farms.
My Views: The subject of animal rights is one that I feel very strongly about. This issue in particular, is very upsetting to me. Thousands of minks are being held in tiny cages and bred for one ridiculous reason: fur coats. I am very anti-fur and to be completely honest, I look down on individuals that spend large amounts of money to wear an animal. Although I do not completely support the method with which the animal activists in New Holstein, Wisconsin are freeing the minks, I do admire their intentions. My main concern with how these individuals are raiding the mink farms is in regards to the community and the quality of life and futures of the minks. When the mink farms are raided, thousands of minks run free. Where do they go? How do they survive? Many of the minks on mink farms were not born in the wild; they were born in cages and have no experience living in their natural habitat. I can only assume that many of the minks do not survive. In addition, I’m sure the thousands of minks running free have negative repercussions on the surrounding communities. However, despite the undesirable outcomes that may result due to the mink raids, it is significant step in the right direction.
