Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Week #7 Article #3
Pamerleau, Susan (2013, October 212) Help end the cycle of family violence. San Antonio Express News
Category of problem: Health, Marriage, Children
Level of problem: National

This article concerns:
The importance of speaking out if you or a loved one is experiencing domestic violence.

Importance/affect on families/individuals:
This is important to families and individual because many people are or know someone who is or has experienced domestic violence. This has an affect on not only the individuals involved, but their family and children.

My input:
Family violence is a serious issue that many need to be educated on. There are many types of violence, and just because you have never been physically harmed doesn't mean that you are not being abused in other ways. One can be abused physically, verbally, emotionally, and even digitally through social media. Name calling, threats, and put downs are all examples of a form of abuse. I was glad to see this article in the paper because it is domestic violence awareness month. It is important to know that there are resources for those being abused, and there are people who want to help you in the justice system. Eliminating any sort of domestic violence can not only prevent further violence to you, but also protect your children from exposure to this sort of environment. Children who are exposed to domestic violence are more likely to be abusers when they get older. They are also more likely to be sexually abused if there is already abuse in the home. Domestic abuse is a dangerous thing, and we should feel the urge to speak out if we ourselves are experiencing it, or if we know people who are in dangerous relationships. This article stood out to me not only because of the month, but also because a student in the FCS department was murdered by her ex-boyfriend last week. There are many danger signs in relationships that we need to always be looking out for, not only for ourselves but for friends and family that we love.
