A Bullied Girl's Suicide

1.http://www.statesman.com/news/ap/education/2-charged-in-fla-after-bullied-girls-suicide/nbPjL/

2. Category of Problem/Issue: Social

3. Level of Problem: National

4. The article concerns:
-Two girls age 12 and 14 were arrested for cyberbullying a girl who then decided to kill herself by jumping off an abandoned concrete plant.

5. Why is this important to individuals/families OR How does it affect individuals/families?
-This story is important because cyber bullying is a serious problem with teenagers and even children who are on social networking sites. It's important for parents to keep a close eye on what their children are doing on the internet so things won't get out of hand like in this case where something tragic happened.

6. What are your views on the issue/problem?
-There are a lot of reasons why I hated school (particularly middle school) and bullying was one of them. I don't know why children are so cold and cruel sometimes and are so easily motivated to bully other kids. Obviously, lack of maturity and possibly problems at home are possibilities but I think most of the time bullying could be prevented if parents were more aware of what their children were doing. Of course that can be a difficult thing for parents to watch over all the time, especially since the rise of social networking, making it more difficult for parents to monitor them. Especially, if their parents aren't familiar with the internet or know how to use computers efficiently (like my older parents).
What really shocked me was the cruelty and coldness that one of the girls had in response to the suicide by saying "Yes, I bullied Rebecca and she killed herself but IDGAF''.
These are federal charges but since the two girls are minors it only makes the situation more complicated and controversial. Should the parents be partially responsible?
Stories like this hopefully will motivate parents to stay updated and keep informing their children of the consequences of being a bully.
