Category of problem:  School safety

Level of problem: Local

This is a problem/issue that individuals/families face.

How does this affect individuals/families? With school shootings becoming such a reoccurrence, parents fear for their children’s lives at the one place they should feel the safest, school.

My view on this policy: The school shootings happening in America are becoming more prevalent and when you wouldn’t expect horrible acts of crime to happen near you, it does. Children should feel safe when they are at school. False alarms or joking about someone having a weapon is not a situation that will be taken lightly. School shootings are a serious issue and they are a huge problem in America. I feel like I hear about a shooting almost once a week. Families face the fear of sending their children off every day into a scary world. It has gotten to the point that I feel security should be vamped up and police or security teams should monitor schools or at least be patrolled. It is a scary thought but I rather have the necessary precautions taken rather than be a victim of another shooting. As a parent of a soon to be elementary school student, my worries are becoming stronger and thoughts of home-schooling are starting to cross my mind. I can’t imagine being a parent of a student who has been involved in one, no matter what age the child is.
