Punished for Being the Designated Driver?

Website: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/14/erin-cox-punished-school-drinking-driving_n_4098086.html?utm_hp_ref=@education123 Level: Local Category: Education Deals with: An “enacted” policy that has been passed to help with a problem/issue that individuals/families face It is important to individuals and families to protect their children from drinking and driving and encourage responsible drinking. We need to teach our children ways to handle these situations and not thinking it won’t happen. Most of us understand that teens are going to experiment when it comes to drinking and they don’t in high school then they most likely later down the road. It is important to teach them responsible ways to handle themselves if or when they do so that they will be able to make safe and mature decisions. Erin was not condoning drinking but only helping ensure that her intoxicated friend was not in any sort of danger. She should be rewarded and not punished for maybe even saving this girls life or preventing other tragedies from occurring. When need to encourage more people like Erin to have a designated driver and drink responsibly. If anyone should be punished it should be the underage girl that was drinking and not the girl who was helping her stay safe. We do not live in a world of black and white with no leniency which is what this school is doing. They vowed to stick to the “no tolerance” and seem stubborn to admit that maybe there is a grey area. I believe this scares these teens to not want to help out their friends when they need a safe ride home and inevitably create more drinking and driving. Just because they feel like they should have no tolerance rule does not have anything to do with being a responsible designated driver to others. Where in the actual law does it say you cannot be sober and drive other intoxicated people to their safe residences? She was punished also by taking away academic groups which most likely would keep her away from drinking in the first place. I feel like this was a stupid punishment for no crime what so ever. Taking away a sport or a club from a student is ridiculous to prevent the use of drinking and drugs which this student clearly excelled at.
