Week 7 Article 1

1.    Christian, C. (2013 October, 8). U.S. Government sues Texas RV park for alleged discrimination against transgender woman. The Houston Chronicle. Retrieved from http://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/U-S-government-sues-Texas-RV-park-for-alleged-4879379.php?cmpid=hpts
2.    Category of Problem: Discrimination
3.    Level of Problem: National
4.    Article Concerns: The owner of an RV park not allowing somebody to live there because of their gender.
5.    Affects individuals/families: This specifically affects the individual that this happened to. This person was forced to move out of her home when the she told the owner that she was a transgender woman.

6.    My Concerns: I think that it was wrong for the owner of this RV park to evict Roxanne Joganik after she told him that she was a transgender woman. When the owner did not know that Roxanne was a transgender woman he did not have a problem with her living there but as soon as he found out he kicked her out. I think that it was very courageous of Roxanne to file a complaint about this with the Department of Urban and Housing Development and fight for her rights. She took a chance and stood up for herself. Although the initial eviction hearing awarded the owner the case was later investigated by Fort Worth’s Regional office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity. Even though Roxanne may not of won her case she still raised awareness to other people about the discrimination that was going on within this particular RV park.
