North LBJ reconstruction project

North LBJ reconstruction project begins Monday

Category of problem: Construction/students

Level of problem: Local

This is an enacted potential policy that individuals/families face. It will start Monday, October 14, 2013.

This affects individuals/families by making roads wider and easier to travel and maneuver through as well as bicyclists and people who walk to class.

My views on the issue/policy: Ever since I have started at Texas State, they are doing construction somewhere that involves road closures, less parking, and heavy traffic flow. The process of this new and improved street will be great when it’s complete in spring 2015, but it will be awful and a huge inconvenience until then. They plan on making it a one way street when LBJ is one of the busiest streets around campus. Texas State is already notorious for overcrowded streets and parking lots; this new renovation is only going to make matters worse. I used to drive that street all the time and never noticed a problem with its original condition. It has plenty of sidewalk space for walkers, skateboarders, and bicyclists and the road is wide enough too. Thousands of residents live on the northwest side along with tons of local businesses. With this in mind, if places/businesses aren’t easily accessible during this year and a half long construction job, they may take a negative hit. People are not going to park a mile down the road to go to Grin’s to eat or wait an hour at the stop light because it is a one way. Road fixtures are always great when their completed but it’s the time in-between that causes a lot of stress, especially around a major university that already deals with numerous construction projects going on.
