Purdue University weathering shutdown

2. Purdue University research is being affected by government shutdown

3. local/national level

4. An enacted policy that is affecting families and individuals

5. Purdue University conducts research to fund many thing at their University. Without those funds cuts will have to be made which affects students directly. Not only has the shutdown affected the college directly, students who receiver the GI bill will not receiving funding if shut down continues.

6. Many universities who conduct research for companies, which get funding through from the government, that also helps fund their university are taking major hits. The companies who would typically pay for these studies do not have access to the funding they would typically get. As a result Purdue has to pay those bills independently. Since the length of the government shutdown is unknown there is no estimate to when Purdue would receive any reimbursement for the research they have conducted. Aside from the financial uncertainty of the university students who receive the G.I bill are in jeopardy of not receiving proper funding for their next semester of college. This type of delay could possibly delay those who are projected to graduate during the spring semester. The government shutdown is being felt predominantly by major Universities who have the means to conduct research. However since still quite some time before the first semester ends Universities are still feeling the pressure of piling bills. Purdue University is not in a state of urgency at this point they are confident that government will be opened back up without taking any major financial hits. The government shutdown is causing many uncertainties and the students who attend these universities by direct assistance from the federal government are feeling the pressure the most. Many people where skeptical about the government shutting down, and even if it did no one thought it would last this long. At this point in time Purdue is not worried but the ever looming “what if” factor is looming in the background, not only for the university but the students as well.
