Austin Bar jokes about Domestic Violence

Week #6 Article #1
Dinges, Gary (2013, October 9) Austin bar makes domestic violence joke to sell beer. Austin American Statesman
Category of problem: Education, Community
Level of problem: Local
This article concerns:
The poor play on words used at an Austin bar to promote domestic beers.
Importance/affect on families/individuals:
This is important to the families and individuals because domestic violence is a very sad and serious issue. Anyone who saw this sidewalk chalk board who has personally experienced domestic violence, or knows someone who experienced domestic violence or even lost their life from it would rightfully be greatly offended.
My input:

I was really shocked when I first heard about this happening on the Yahoo news feed. Then, after being shocked, I realized that this happened in Austin. Sigh. It is so very unfortunate that someone thought that this was a good tagline. Sure, one can like their domestic beers. But to say “I like my beer like I like my violence: domestic”, it’s just terrible. This statement’s poor wording expresses the idea that domestic violence is a good thing, and it clearly is not. This is extremely bad publicity for this establishment, and is unfortunate that one employees decision created an uproar of negative attention. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and this is a time when individuals and families who have experienced violence or want to bring awareness to domestic violence are advocating for more people to be aware of the issue. Saying you will donate a dollar for every domestic beer you sell is a great idea and promotion to have at your bar. But that statement is communicating the opposite of raising awareness, it is making a joke of something that is very serious.
