Category of problem: Economy/Extortion

Level of problem: Local

This is an enacted potential policy that individuals/families face.

This affects individuals/families, fraud and extortion will lead to jail time regardless of how much political power you have.

My views on the issue/policy: Kilpatrick is content with his punishment. He did not admit nor did he deny he accrued almost one million dollars more than his salary in his short 6 year term as Mayor of Detroit. This is ridiculous. This isn’t the first time extortion and laundering government campaign money has happened and it won’t be the last. Politicians who feel they have a part in making a massive change usually end up targeted with some sort of financial obligation/issue. They think that because the public is on their side that they can get away with anything. From Kilpatrick’s actions, the city of Detroit is now on a downslide to bankruptcy and corruption. Millions of dollars were being spent through citizen’s tax dollars only to fund Kilpatrick’s wallet. It makes me think about what other high powered political figure is out there doing the same thing that will be on the news next week. This mayor also tapped into a charity fund for distressed Detroit families and their children. Here is the mayor, a job taken on by someone who wants to clean up his town and do good for the people, only to steal from a kid’s camp and non-profit organization.
