Sorority Exposes Its Rejection of Black Candidate

1. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/13/us/sorority-exposes-its-rejection-of-black-candidate.html

2. Category of Problem/Issue: Racism/Discrimination

3. Level of Problem: Local

4. The article concerns:
-At The University of Alabama, a traditionally white sorority turns down an eligible black female. Apparently, the members of the sorority were pressured by former alumnae to turn her down.

5. Why is this important to individuals/families OR How does it affect individuals/families?
-Racism seems to be an issue of the past, for the most part. When people, or even worse, groups that represent a university as a whole do this, it leaves room for more conflict within the community. When people allow things like this to happen, the chances of it happening again are high. There hasn't been a black female member in the sorority since 2003.

6. What are your views on the issue/problem?
-The fact that racism/discrimination still exists stuns me, especially coming from administration at a university. These are the people who are supposed to be guiding these young ladies and other students to make the right choices. Instead, they are spreading unethical and racist ideals. I find the actions of the administration just plain wrong and disgusting. With these type of ideals, we cannot go forward. It's 2013 people, segregation is OVER, lets get with it.
