Same-Sex Marriage in New Mexico

Link: New York Times: Marriage Licenses for Same-Sex Couples Force Issue to Fore in New Mexico

Category: Marriage Equality

Level: State

Concerning: An "enacted" policy that has been passed to help with a problem/issue that individuals/families face.

Why is this important/affect individuals/families? This issue has a powerful and direct impact on same-sex couples and their families.  Aside from the thrill of finally receiving a marriage license, same-sex couples are now empowered and are moving closer to complete equality.

My Views: I am thrilled that “six of New Mexico’s most populous counties” have begun issuing marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples.  It comes without surprise that there has been backlash and negative reactions from New Mexico officials regarding these actions. However, it is encouraging to know that there has been a lack of protests from citizens living in the counties, especially considering the large Catholic community that is present in the area. It is also heartwarming to know that within 24 hours after the court order gave clerks the justification and permission to begin granting marriage licenses, a mass wedding ceremony was performed. Members of the community came together and donated their time, labor and money to contribute to the event. Occurrences like these are encouraging and hopefully inspire other communities and states to follow in New Mexico’s footsteps. Although this is a small step towards marriage equality in our nation, it is a huge stride for same-sex couples living in New Mexico.

  1. This cause my attention because my best friend is apart of the LGBT community. We have always talked about him being being the Man of honor at my wedding. It is just makes me mad that just because he likes a different sex he doesn't have the same rights as me. I always tell people who are against it that they are entitled to their own opinion but what if the tables were turned. What if being straight was banned and how would they feel if someone weren't giving them the same right? I get the same answer every time "but it's not like that so there's nothing to worry about." I feel like who is the government to infringe on other's people relationship. People feel like they should just change and not be gay. It doesn't work like that. it's great to see more places are allowing same-sex marriages. This quote is from a song that I love "A world so hateful some would rather die than be who they are, And a certificate on paper isn't gonna solve it all
But it's a damn good place to start." That just about sums up my views. I attached the link below.
