Phony Legal Aid to Immigrants Gets Fined
Austin American-Statesman
Category: immigration
Level: national
This article concerns a potential policy that is being considered to help with a problem/issue that families/individuals face.
Why it is important:
When an individual seeks a new life in America and is trying to follow the legal protocol, they should not have to deal with false claims of help. Someone who is new to the US and doesn't understand our language will have an especially hard time distinguishing fraudulent claims from true and honest help in securing citizenship.
My views:
This bill may help to reduce the frequency of fraudulent claims for help with gaining citizenship, but it won't deter them completely. I think that the fine will discourage people from taking advantage of immigrants who are willing to do almost anything for citizenship and that is a step in the right direction. Those who have been duped in their attempt at citizenship are encouraged to refile their cases. They are also encouraged to contact authorities. Most may not be comfortable with contacting authorities due to fears of being deported, but I think offering a second chance for citizenship will bring in more reports which will help identifying those who are offering false services.
