Concerning: A problem/issue that families face.
Why is this important/affect individuals/families?
Low-income children in the Austin area can now have access to music education
and musical instruments through their schools. By introducing music to students and encouraging them to participate, schools are providing new opportunities for success.
My Views: I think this is a wonderful initiative that should
be continued and expanded. Numerous children in the Austin area live in
low-income households and do not have access to musical education and instruments.
However, as the article states, “its not just about the instruments”. Providing students the opportunity to participate
in the arts can give then the enthusiasm and drive they need to succeed. The
possibility of contributing to the arts through music might be the motivation
that some students desire. In addition, studies have shown that “students who are
involved in extracurricular activities…perform better in school”. While many
students participate in extracurricular activities such as sports teams, some
students do not feel a connection to athletic groups. Participation in art and
music groups can create a sense of belonging for these students. Not only is establishing
a sense of belonging important for students, but it can help ignite their self
confidence, which is vital for success. I believe that bringing art and music
into the lives of low-income students will play a beneficial role in their
educational success and ultimately their futures.
