Mary Clare San Antonio Express News November 8, 2013
Category of problem: Trans fat in foods
Level of problem: National
This article concerns: The entire American population
Affect on families and individuals:
This law passing will hopefully help reduce the rate of heart disease in the United States, or at least be a start.
My opinion on the article:
I think it is awesome that the FDA is finally stepping in and banning trans fats from the foods. I am a nutrition major so I see first hand the side effects that trans fats has on individuals especially on their hearts. It clogs the arteries surrounding the heart leaving less room for blood flow. Other countries are already ahead of us on this idea and have banned trans fats years ago when they figured out the health effects it presented. The United States having one of the highest percentage of overweight children in the entire world only made this decision by the FDA that much easier, especially now that trans fats were being placed into everyday items like breakfast cereals that kids eat so often. Hopefully this will be the first step in the fight against obesity and would in turn seriously lower our health care and help with the national budget in the process.
