Associated Press (2013, October 29) Docs to parents: limit kids’ texts, tweets, online. San Antonio Express News- Chicago (AP)
Category of problem: Children, Education, Health
Level of problem: National
This article concerns:
The negative effects of allowing children and teenagers to have complete freedom and constant access to social media, text messaging and the internet.
Importance/affect on families/individuals:
This is important to families and individual because having unlimited access to the internet can have many negative effects on children and teenagers, from bullying to promiscuity to obesity.
My input:
I think that more parents need to be aware of what their children are doing on media devices. I am not saying to take away their privacy all together, but to limit their time spent on media devices. Giving children and teens unlimited access to the internet and social media is just not good for them. They should be spending their time out playing with friends or doing other extracurricular activities. The internet is a scary place, and to give curious young minds unlimited or unrestricted access is not ever a good thing. And social media should not only be limited, but monitored. After all, it is social media. A parent can monitor these things without taking their children's privacy away because by having a profile on a social media website, the child is putting things online for the public to see. Also, through social media, there are a lot of occurrences of cyber bullying, which happens all too often. People have been known to say things online through social media that they would never say in person. As far as cell phone usage, I have seen many parents attempt to limit their children's use by setting rules on what time they can use it until. However, in those instances, more likely than not the child sneaks the phone to the bedroom and overnight. I feel that there definitely needs to be more restrictions on children in regards to media devices.
