Fad-Dieting NOT Effective

Category: Health
Level: National
Concerning a problem/issue that individuals face
Why is this important/how does this affect individuals/families? The issue of “fad-dieting” is important because it affects the physical and mental wellness of individuals.
My Views: I completely agree with this article in that “fad-dieting” is ineffective. Unfortunately, our society has become increasingly vain and places value on individuals based on their appearances.  This has caused almost everyone living in our society to begin overanalyzing and obsessing about his or her outward appearances. One of the main issues that many people have begun fixating on in regards to their appearance is weight loss. While I am a firm believer in daily exercise and healthy eating, these things should not completely consume your life. Everything in life should be done in moderation; it is unhealthy to completely obsess over dieting and weight loss. Furthermore, it is harmful to believe that by participating in a fad or crash-diet, your body will magically transform and you will suddenly be happy with yourself. Regrettably, that is what many of these fad-diets falsely advertise. These diets are unhealthy, and are detrimental to your physical and mental health. Instead of fad-dieting or participating in any kind of diet, our society needs to make a change by engaging in a full-time healthy lifestyle.

  1. I completely agree with fad-dieting being completely ridiculous. These diets are made to sound great on paper but easy and fast weight loss, does not exist. In order to lose weight and not harm yourself, you have to actually change your lifestyle and put in the time and work, it does not come "easy". A lot of these diets are extremely unhealthy and actually detrimental to people's health. For instance, the Atkins diet had so much publicity and hype about being easy and extremely effective, all you had to do was not eat any carbohydrates whatsoever. But, the human body requires carbs in order to create energy for your muscles and metabolic processes to do its work, and without them, the body will produce Ketones which are not good. People believe that they can stay on these fad diets for a few months, lose 10 or 15 pounds, or however much they want and then go back to their old eating habits, but they end up gaining all the weight back. These diets are not practical and unhealthy for everyone.
