-The FDA is now taking the steps to slowly phase out trans fats in the food industry
5. Why is this important to individuals/families OR How does it affect individuals/families?
-Trans fats are a threat to people's health and according to the article, "the move could prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths."
6. What are your views on the issue/problem?
-Trans fats are shown to lower good cholesterol and raise bad cholesterol. The US struggles with obesity and I think that completely eliminating trans fats will be a positive preventative measure. New York was one of the firsts to outlaw trans fats and although it was a struggle at first for some restaurants, other articles have shown that it's already made a positive impact and many New Yorkers didn't even notice the transition. The FDA is only going to take baby steps at the moment and has not set a timeline for the phase out, which is annoying but the FDA promises to move quickly. Regardless of the timeline, this is progress and I'm excited to see what comes in the future.
