Chartwells Steps Their Health Game Up

1. http://star.txstate.edu/node/1079

2. Category of Problem/Issue: Food/Nutrition

3. Level of Problem: Local

4. The article concerns:
-Chartwells is now offering healthier options, including salad bar "Wild Greens" at LBJ, a smoothie and salad bar at Jones, and a wrap place at The Den. Chartwells has also made it easier for students to count calories and view on campus menus online at www.dineoncampus.com. There is even an app available for iPhone and Android for convenience.

5. Why is this important to individuals/families OR How does it affect individuals/families?
-First year freshman living on campus are obligated to purchase a meal plan and what these dining halls offer is important to nourish and feed our students! It's important to have healthy options because freshman will be eating at these dining halls every day.

6. What are your views on the issue/problem?
-As a senior, I envy the options and changes the freshman are now able to enjoy. The new opening of Au Bon Pain is great, the salad bar looks awesome, and the face lift they gave Harris looks fantastic. More importantly, the food actually LOOKS GOOD, and doesn't look like everything just came out of a can. By the end of my freshman year I was so sick of all the unhealthy options of fried, canned food that instead of gaining the "freshman 15," I actually lost weight. I completely lost my appetite anytime I was within sight of anything that had to do with the dining halls and had to force myself to nibble things here and there. Instead, I would spend my money at grocery stores buying fruits, yogurts and other snacks. The new on campus options show that Chartwells are turning a new leaf and offering better options, and food overall.

  1. As a freshman, I also was required to live in the dorm and had an awful experience with the food on campus. Practically all there was to eat on campus was pizza, or macaroni and cheese. Just things loaded with carbohydrates and empty calories that really did not leave the consumer feeling satisfied or fulfilled. If you were a vegetarian or wanted some semblance of healthy food, there were only one or two options or you had to go out and buy food for yourself even though it was required to buy a meal plan if you lived on campus. The fact that Chartwells is taking an initiative and making their food more healthy is such a relief. Maybe I will actually go sample some of these new awesome foods next time i am on campus!
