Kimberly Hefling, San Antonio Express News, November 8, 2013.

Level: National

Category: school reading and math ratings

Who does this article concern: Students that are currently enrolled in middle school and junior high.  This article concerns the parents of those kids and the United States education system as a whole.

How does this article affect families or individuals?
It affects everyone because in comparison to other counties, our education system is simply lacking.  There are multiple reasons for this which I will discuss but our nations youth are being severely affected long term by this lack of education, we are often times being put in the dust when education ratings are brought up.

My opinion on the article:
I think it is amazing that we are at least making some progress even if it is only in small increments on education.  The United States has been far behind so many countries from an education ratings standpoint and I think it is time we make more of a push to start competing with countries like china and japan.  Many schools are overcrowded, and lack the necessary tools needed for proper education, so as usual, it comes down to money issues.  The United States budget is obviously in bad shape but I think if we could restructure it to having less money spent on say the military, and that money left over spent on education, then we could make that first step.
