Students warned not to ditch school for ACL festival

Week #5 Article #1

1.    Benjamin Wermund (2013, October 3) Students warned not to ditch school for ACL festival. Austin American Statesman

2.    Category of problem: ACL festival and high school kids

3.    Level of problem: Local

4.    This article concerns: A problem that individuals/family face

5.    Importance/affect of families/individuals: This affect families/individual because parents are going to have to take off work to take their kids to the doctor and students are not going to get excused absent even if they bring a not from home for this day only.

6.    My input: Why is this even a problem? I don’t understand what high school kids are doing down at ACL in the first place. I don’t think ACL is any place for kids. There is too much grow up things going on at ACL for it to be safe for kid to go. I also don’t understand why the parents of these kids think it would be a good idea for their kids to go to ACL in the first place. I am sure that their parents know that they are going to ACL because the tickets to are not cheap, so they have to get the money from somewhere. However, I don’t think it is the school place to tell the parents that they have to take their children to the doctor if they are absent on Friday due to being sick. I don’t think the school should be able to tell the parent that just for this one day you must have a doctor note. Parents might have a hard time getting a doctor note especially since at most doctor offices you have to call and make an appointment which you usually can’t get one on the same day or sometimes even the next day and some parents have to work and don’t or can’t take off work just because their kid is sick. As for teachers calling in the day of ACL, I feel that is up to the teacher and the teacher only.
