4. Content: Texas schools have a waiver to No Child Left Behind Act

5. Importance: The No Child Left Behind Act is implemented to make kids do better on standardized tests. Texas schools have not been performing very well and they need 90 percent of students in each school and district to pass the state’s standardized tests in reading and math. 95 percent of Texas schools would not have been able to reach the standard. This waiver enforces the lowest performing 15 percent to be under the acts requirements. With this waiver comes a condition that makes schools create a standardized evaluation system for teachers and principals to students’ scores.

6. I feel this waiver is helpful in a way but also sad. I would love to see all our kids do great and go to college but when 95 percent of Texas schools cannot pass a standardized test I feel that our school systems are failing us. I remember taking the TAKS tests and other standardized tests and I passed which is all that is needed. In my regular classes I was prepared enough to do adequately on them and I wonder how education in the classroom has changed to not make this possible.
